Current Limitations and Future Outlook

As of 2025, ACP is in its pilot phase and operates under several notable constraints:

• No self-serve onboarding: Integration currently requires direct approval and validation from OpenAI.
• Geographic limitation: Only U.S.-based merchants are eligible today, but international expansion is planned for 2026.
• Limited payment methods: Currently support is limited to major cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
• Single-item carts: Users can only purchase one item at a time.

These limitations are temporary. As OpenAI gathers operational and compliance feedback, the protocol is expected to evolve toward multi-item carts, international currencies, and platform-independent onboarding.
